Although the church is principally concerned with the spiritual growth and development of her members, we have also taken a vested interest in the academic success of the students as well. The development of a comprehensive tutoring program has begun and is designed to assist those students who need additional support in the core subject areas - emphasis on the Georgia Performance Learning Standards. Parents and educators familiar with the new directions in the teaching of core subjects understand the need to prepare students not only for the classroom, for state-mandated assessments as well. Despite the obstacles that many students encounter, the dominance of standardized testing, and the core curriculum movement, there has been enormous growth and development in the academic success of our students.
The impetus here is that Wesley Chapel wants her young students to be academically prepared to meet the challenges in the classroom and in life. As Rev. Lewis has said, "There is no need for any student to fail in school". The Higher Education ministry seeks to provide an arena that fosters one-on-one academic growth. The idea is for students to utilize these sessions as extensions of the regular classroom. Currently, two sessions are held on Saturday, from 11:00 am to 12:30pm, and 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm. Special accommodations are arranged for students unable to attend on Saturday.
Tutorial Needs forms are now available for parents or guardians to complete and turn back in. Once a form is completed, the committee works to match a tutor with the student – but the first step is in filling out the form! Tutoring opportunities are available for Pre-K through 12th grade. Stop by the church office or in the lobby to pick up a form. If you are interested in tutoring students, there is a form and place for you! Grab one of our Tutoring Volunteer Forms and indicate which skills you can support. We need you too! You can also speak with Rufus Johnson, Adrienne Favors, Randy Brown, or Lachandra Pye to find out ways you can have your child’s teacher help you in identifying the skills your child needs to work on.
